Short answerGive everyone one link and one QR code to a shared gallery that works in any phone browser, with no app to download in another country's app store. Put the venue Wi-Fi on the card so guests don't need roaming data, set the gallery to the wedding location's timezone, and remind guests to upload the rest of their photos once they're home.
What makes destination weddings different
- Guests from many countries, with different phones, languages and messaging apps. Not everyone is in the same WhatsApp group, and some don't use WhatsApp at all.
- Roaming data. Many guests switch it off abroad, so uploads wait for Wi-Fi.
- Several days of events: welcome drinks, the ceremony, a beach day, a farewell brunch.
- Everyone leaves at once. After the farewell brunch, guests fly to different continents, and the photos go with them.
Set up before anyone flies
- Create the gallery a few weeks before, and add your programme: welcome drinks, ceremony, reception, brunch.
- Set the timezone to the wedding location. This is the one destination-specific step. Photos are sorted into albums by when they were taken, and the timezone tells the gallery what "7 pm at the reception" means.
- Put the link in your wedding website and travel info, so guests have it before they arrive.
- Print the QR cards at home and pack them, or send the file to the venue to print locally.
What to put in the travel information
Most destination couples send guests a travel guide or have a wedding website with flights, hotels and the schedule. Add a short photo section to it:
Photos and videos We'd love to see the week through your eyes. Add your photos and videos to our wedding album any time, during the trip or once you're home: [link] It opens in your phone's browser. No app or account needed.
Guests who read it before they travel will recognise the QR code when they see it at the venue, and some will save the link straight away.
Guests who speak different languages
At a destination wedding, the guest list often mixes two or three languages. Keep the card wording short, and consider printing it in two languages, such as English and the language of the other family. A QR code needs no translation, and "no app needed" is the line that matters most for guests who are unsure. For wording ideas, see 30 QR sign wordings.
On the trip
- Put the Wi-Fi name on the card next to the QR code: "Hotel Wi-Fi: Villa-Guest".
- Use the cards at every event, not just the reception. The welcome drinks and beach day produce some of the best photos.
- Mention it at the welcome event. "We'd love every photo you take this week. Scan the card and add them."
- Videos are big. Suggest guests upload them on Wi-Fi in the evening, rather than on roaming data.
After everyone flies home
This is when most destination photos arrive. Guests scroll through their camera rolls on the plane and want to share. Send one message to every group or email list you have, a day or two after the wedding:
Thank you for travelling so far to celebrate with us 💛 We'd love every photo and video you took this week. Add them here, no app needed: [link]
A week later, share one favourite guest photo with a thank-you and the link again. It reminds the guests who meant to and forgot.
The photos you only get at a destination wedding
Destination weddings produce photos a photographer usually isn't there for. Ask guests specifically for them in your reminder message:
- Arrivals: guests landing, meeting at the hotel, the first evening together.
- The days around the wedding: the beach day, a boat trip, a group dinner in town.
- Getting ready in hotel rooms, often with a view.
- Travel home: tired faces at the airport, the last breakfast.
If you add these days to your programme, the photos sort themselves into albums for each day, and the gallery reads like the story of the whole trip.
Common problems, and how to avoid them
- The QR code doesn't scan in the evening. Outdoor venues get dark. Print on matte card, keep the code at least 2.5 cm wide, and put a card somewhere with light, such as the bar.
- Wi-Fi is weak at the venue. Tell guests the photos can wait: the link works just as well from the hotel or from home.
- Albums look jumbled. Usually the timezone was set to where you live, not where the wedding was. Fix the timezone and photos are sorted again.
- Half the guests never upload. The reminder a week later makes the biggest difference. Most guests mean to share and simply forget once they're back at work.
Why an app-free gallery matters abroad
Asking guests from different countries to install the same app rarely works: different app stores, different languages, roaming limits on downloads. A gallery that opens in the phone browser works the same for a guest from Dubai, London or Mumbai. With FrameAmour, guests type a name or stay anonymous, add photos and videos, and the original files are kept for you to download.
